The Nurse's Candle

The candle symbolizes light for almost all of us. To us nurses, the candle symbolizes our burning passion to care for the sick, thirst for knowledge and belief in the integrity of the profession. To a nursing student, this is just a symbol. But when I became a nurse, I realized that the oil lamp which replaced the candle nowadays, is one symbol that bespeaks a thousand words as well as describes what nurses are. This tradition came and evolved from “The Lady with The Lamp,” Florence Nightingale, who during her time, used an oil lamp to light her path and care for the wounded soldiers amidst the darkness of night – to some, they call this duty. We call this a nurse's passion. Passion to care fuels almost everything in terms of the nursing profession. Without the burning passion, you won't see a nurse do her rounds when electricity goes out.
